The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG is funding a research training group on

*Harbours for container ships of future generations
    - Interaction of ship, fluid, structure and soil -

*at TUHH, Hamburg University of Technology. It starts in april 2005. We are searching excellent young researchers from civil engineering,
mechanics, ships and marine engineering for seven Doktoral students and one Postdoc.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant & PhD Student in Structural Dynamics

Postdoctoral Research Assistant & PhD Student in Structural Dynamics

Department of Civil Engineering - University of Bristol (UK)

Both posts are available under the EPSRC-funded project ‘Investigation of nonlinear dynamic cable behaviour and cable-deck interaction of cable-stayed bridges’. The project aims to advance fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of cable and bridge deck vibrations, which are surprisingly common on major cable-stayed bridges. The Research Assistant will be responsible for the design and implementation of large-scale experiments in the new Earthquake and Large Structures Laboratory, a major part of the £20m Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics Engineering (BLADE) (www.blade.bris.ac.uk). The tests will be one of the first large-scale applications of the novel technique of ‘dynamic substructuring’, whereby the physical cable will be coupled, in real time, with a numerical model of a bridge deck, to study their dynamic interactions. The experiments will aim to validate and refine mathematical models of the behaviour, working closely with the PhD student (also to be appointed).

The Research Assistant will join the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre in the Department of Civil Engineering, which has considerable experience in dynamics of cable-stayed bridges and in large-scale dynamic testing. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Automatic Control Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Applied Nonlinear Maths Group in the Department of Engineering Maths.

Candidates for the Research Assistantship should have a PhD or equivalent experience in structural dynamics or a related area. An understanding of cable and/or bridge dynamics in particular is desirable. Experience of experimental dynamics is required, preferably at large scale, including design and implementation of experiments and signal processing. Also useful, but not essential would be a knowledge of structural control techniques. Candidates should be able to work in an interdisciplinary research environment and work well with laboratory technical staff.
