AASHTO(cầu đường) mà hay đề cập đến ở Việt Nam thực chất không phải là Tiêu chuẩn (Standard) mà từ "Tiêu chuẩn" là do ta Việt hóa theo cách của chúng ta và chưa chuẩn xác thôi.

Chẳng hạn về Kết cấu Mặt đường ô tô có: AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures. Thường thì mỗi Bang (state) của Mỹ lại xây dựng những Chỉ dẫn thiết kế riêng dựa trên Nền tảng của AASHTO để cho phù hợp với điều kiện địa phương. Như mọi người đều biết là điều kiện về khí hậu của các Bang ở Mỹ là rất khác nhau.

Ở Việt Nam hiện nay cũng đang theo xu hướng này, chẳng hạn về TK Mặt đường, Bộ GTVT đã ban hành Specification for Design of Flexible Pavement Structures 22 TCN – 274 – 01 (Ministry of Transportation, 2001).

Việc sử dụng Chỉ dẫn/Quy định kỹ thuật như thế nào phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào Tư vấn thiết kế, bằng cách này sẽ nâng cao khả năng và tính chủ động của người thiết kế tùy thuộc vào điều kiện cụ thể của mỗi công trình. Đối với các dự án lớn về Đường ô tô (ở VN), thì trước khi thực hiện, đều phải xây dựng riêng một "Quy định kỹ thuật- Technical Specification" cho công trình này. Cuốn "Quy định kỹ thuật" này có thể kết hợp từ nhiều nguồn Tiêu chuẩn, Chỉ dẫn thiết kế khác nhau, để làm sao cho phù hợp nhất với điều kiện thực tế.

AASHTO trong ngành GTVT
