I tottally agree with anh Pham about the salary issue. To make 60$/hr (60x40hrs/weekx52 weeks = 124,800$/year base salary not including bonus & other benefits), the engineer must have following qualifications: SE (structural engineer) license, 15+ years of experience and must be a Principal Engineer of an office.
With MS degree + 0 year of experience, you can get about 50K to start. PhD + 0 year of experience, it is about 60K.
2-6 year with PE license, it is about 60K to 70K max.
7+ year of experience & a SE license, equivalent to Senior Project Engineer or Project Manager, you can get about 80K to 100K, 4 weeks of vacation, 10%-15% of anual salary as your bonus and overtime pay is about 5%-10% of your anual salary. Construction engineer usually make 20%-30% more than design structural engineer.
So, don't dream about making a lot of money in Structural Engineering :-). It is very tough and not rewarding at all. Instead of trying to get a PhD, someone may reconsider his decision to go to Medical School to get a MD instead :-(. Sorry to say that but ít is a reality.
